American GI Forum

Founded on March 26, 1948 in Corpus Christi, Texas by Dr. Hector P. Garcia, the American GI Forum is a congressionally chartered veterans and civil rights organization. Dr. Garcia became a central figure of the Hispanic civil rights movement by winning the right for Mexican American veterans to be laid to rest with dignity at Arlington National Cemetery and in their home communities. The AGIF’s advocacy on behalf of Hispanics to repeal the poll tax, serve on juries and receive a quality education has been internationally acclaimed. Their impact on America’s political landscape has been taught in college courses and featured on PBS documentaries.
